What Is Regentex®?

Regentex® is a durable poly-cotton canvas, typically made from approximately 52% polyester and 48% cotton. The polyester component provides strength and resistance to tearing, while the cotton content allows breathability and natural moisture regulation. It is treated during manufacturing for water resistance and, in many cases, fire retardancy. Over time, these treatments will naturally diminish, making regular maintenance essential.

Routine Cleaning & Maintenance

Keeping the canvas clean prevents dirt, mould, and environmental pollutants from breaking down the fibres or coating.

Cleaning Schedule

• Deep annually.

• Spot-clean as required – after storms, bird droppings, sap, or heavy pollen.

Deep Cleaning Process

1. Remove loose debris
   Brush off leaves, dust, and surface dirt using a soft-bristle brush or a cool water rinse.

2. Gentle washing
   Use lukewarm water and a mild, non-detergent soap or specialist canvas cleaner. Avoid harsh detergents, bleach or strong household cleaners.

3. Treat stains and mildew
   Light mildew can often be removed with a diluted solution of white vinegar or a canvas-safe mildew cleaner. Gently scrub affected areas.

4. Avoid high-pressure washing
   High-pressure jets can damage the weave and strip essential treatments, so use only gentle water pressure if rinsing with a hose.

5. Rinse thoroughly
   Ensure all soap residue is fully washed away to avoid streaking or interference with reproofing.

Reproofing & Weatherproofing

As the protective layer wears over time, reproofing restores water repellency and helps prevent saturation.

• Reproof annually or whenever water stops beading on the surface.

• Use a reproofing product designed for poly-cotton canvas.

• Apply in dry, calm conditions, ideally when the canvas is slightly damp (if recommended by product instructions).

• Allow full curing time before exposing to rain.

Drying & Prevention of Mould

Moisture is the most common cause of mould and odour issues, so thorough drying is critical.

Drying Guidelines

• Always allow the canvas to dry completely after cleaning or heavy rain.

• Open vents, doors, and windows to encourage airflow.

• Avoid packing or covering the canvas while damp.

• Condensation inside the yurt can also cause moisture problems—ensure regular ventilation.

Storage: Off-Season Care

If your yurt is dismantled or stored over winter:

• Store only when completely dry.

• Use a breathable cover or bag—never seal canvas in plastic or airtight containers.

• Keep in a cool, dry space with good airflow.

• Fold loosely to avoid deep creases.

• Store wooden components upright or under slight tension to maintain their form.

Inspections & Minor Repairs

Regular inspections help catch issues before they become costly.

• Check seams, stitching, and stress points each season.

• Patch small holes promptly using compatible canvas or a repair kit.

• Lubricate zips and check fastenings for wear.

• Wood elements may need light sanding and oiling; metal parts may require cleaning and rust protection.

Helpful Tips & Best Practices

• New canvas may drip slightly during the first few wetting and drying cycles—this is normal and helps fibres swell and seal.

• Avoid corrosive substances like oils, solvents, or chemical cleaners.

• Rotate and adjust tension ropes or fixings to ensure even wear.

• Manage internal humidity by using stoves, vents, or air circulation to avoid condensation buildup.
